When I stepped into a home under construction in The Retreat @ Kennesaw Mountain in December of 2005, I knew that it wouldn’t be the last time…and it definitely wasn’t.
It has been one of the most, if not THE most, interesting home builds that I’ve ever had the pleasure to witness. Luck would be on my side this time because this was no ordinary home, it was to be the new showcase home of 2005 Custom Home Pacesetter Award winner, nationally recognized custom homebuilder Jerry Bonner of Bonner Custom Homes.
I had no idea at the time.
A return visit was in order. We often make return visits to new homes under construction if we see the beginning construction of a feature that piques our interest. That was certainly the case with the English cottage…only it got better and better as the days, weeks and months wore on.
Well…all good things must come to an end. That will be the case with this English cottage-style home in the coming days. They’ve already begun to move in with only a few odds and ends to complete. They’ve even secured a P.O.D.S. container to aid them in the move-in process. Here’s a great post on PODS by Lynnette of The Fun Times Guide.
It has been quite the eye-opening experience, to say the least. The old-world craftsmanship mixed with today’s technologically-advanced building techniques combined to make this a home for the ages…truly.
As a matter of fact, homeowners Jerry and Julie Bonner, of Bonner Custom Homes, plan to showcase different aspects of their new home to potential customers on an upcoming website of their own regarding “what you can do in homebuilding today” and “this is how it is done”…not to mention “and we can do it for you”. Their focus will be more towards extremely high quality “down-sized” homes for the discriminating homebuyer. Bonner Custom Homes has traditionally been a home builder of multi-million dollar homes in the affluent Buckhead area of Atlanta with homes as large as 47,000 sq.ft. Bonner utilized an on-site accounting software program for that job called Quickbooks Pro for Contractors that streamlined the entire bookkeeping process.
If I were in the market and could afford the home of my dreams, Bonner Custom Homes would be my choice…HANDS DOWN! I am a witness to their attention to detail and everything that goes into making a custom home of your dreams.
I appreciate the accessibility and hospitality that Rhett Bonner, Jerry and Julie Bonner, master carpenter Isaac Tate and the remaining workers have shown me during my visits.
I will be posting quite a few more entries over the coming months on different aspects of this English cottage-style home but didn’t have the time to post them previously… so stay tuned.

I started as a home-stalker… visiting brand new homes under construction in the neighborhoods near my house.
That inspired me to write about home building and home renovation projects — chronicling homes during different phases of construction from a consumer’s point-of-view. Basically, the tips you’ll find in my articles are a collection of checklists for what I think should (and should not) go into building or remodeling a quality home.
