Would You Want To Live Under One Of Those Huge Powerline Towers? Not Me!

This post on those huge, towering powerlines and the placement of homes nearby is the start of a whole new category for me: Dumb Homebuilding Ideas. It hit me like a bolt of lightning when we were driving around gathering landscaping ideas from established neighborhoods nearby.

Would you want to live near these powerlines?

Dumb Homebuilding Ideas will encompass anything we see as just not a smart decision regarding homebuilding, subdivisions, landscaping and, I’m quite sure, a few other things that we’ll come across in our home viewing travels.

If you came to this site looking for answers to questions regarding the effects of Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) on humans, you’ll find all you really need to know in the links found below.

I have no intention of engaging anyone in a debate regarding Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) generated from powerlines (or home appliances, for that matter) and the effects on the human population that live under or near them. However, I do want to briefly mention how dumb it is to put homes right next to these huge towers.

You couldn’t pay me to live next door to one of these things! Oh, you can see for miles as you gaze down the succession of towers that blaze by you in a clear cut path, but it is awful to look at. I can’t see it as a positive in any way, whether it be lowered (or sustained) property value or the ease in which you’ll be able to resell your home. I happen to know that the powerlines running through the entrance to this subdivision were in place prior to Hickory Branch subdivision being developed. Land must be cheap right there!

Facts About ELF and EMF Effects On Humans

  • Power Lines and Cancer FAQ’s from Medical College of Wisconsin

  • GreenFacts.org Scientific Facts on Electromagnetic Fields from Power Lines. This site is EXTREMELY informative regarding any/all information that has to do with ELF and EMF. Their source is the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC); a part of the World Health Organization (WHO). Be sure to click on each individual tab towards the top of the page of the site.

  • California Electric and Magnetic Fields Program Factsheet on EMF PDF file with statistics on EMF from powerlines, as well as home appliances.

I started as a home-stalker… visiting brand new homes under construction in the neighborhoods near my house. That inspired me to write about home building and home renovation projects — chronicling homes during different phases of construction from a consumer's point-of-view. Basically, the tips you'll find in my articles are a collection of checklists for what I think should (and should not) go into building or remodeling a quality home.
