Remember Clotheslines? Simplicity and Eco-Friendly Come Together

rotary_clothesline.JPG Okay…so I’m wandering through all of the booths at the Go Green Expo this past weekend and I take notice of quite a few products that have a lot of technology and innovation behind them to make them green and to have them stand out amongst the competition down the row.

Then I came upon the BreezeDryer booth. Nothing very technical here and not a competitor in sight. Just a bunch of different styles of clotheslines to line dry your clothes on. Now THIS is eco-friendly! Imagine enjoying the great outdoors and doing your laundry at the same time.

It brought a big smile to my face for a couple of reasons.

  • It took me back to my childhood when line drying was the norm in some households and we’d run in and out of all of the clothes hanging out to dry in other people’s backyards on the way to a friend’s house.
  • I was also thinking about the sheer simplicity of line drying your clothes and how it really fell in line with the whole green experience like a breath of fresh air.

I picked up some literature on all of the different styles of indoor and outdoor clotheslines they had available and took a photo of my son in front of one of the rotary models just for kicks.

They were displaying these different types of clothes lines:

  • Rotary
  • Folding Frame
  • Retractable
  • Portable
  • Rotary Hoist (folds up and down like an umbrella)

They also sell drying racks which are useful for your fine washables and to hang all of those summer beach towels and swim trunks out to dry.

I happened to notice that one of the flyers I took had the following printed on it:

The Top 10 Reasons to Line Dry Your Clothes

So…here we go.

10. Give your clothes a break from the heat of the dryer (those lint balls in your dryer filter are your clothes breaking down).

9. Let the sun do the bleaching and sanitizing and get rid of stains more easily.

8. Spend some time outdoors…it’s good for you!

7. Recruit your children to help, and get to spend some quiet time with them.

6. Watch your electric bill go down; the dryer can use up to one-sixth of a household’s energy.

5. The sight of your clothes spinning in the breeze on a Hills Rotary will cause immediate relaxation.

4. Cutting back on dryer use will reduce your carbon output and help the environment.

3. There are numerous clothesline options abailable which make any size yard capable of having a line.

2. Hanging wash gives you the opportunity to take a break from the business of life.

1. It’s free, it’s relaxing, and it gives you the POWER TO SAVE.

Here are a couple more reasons that I think could be added:

  1. Even if you have a dryer, there are certain items that should line dry.
  2. If your power is out, your clothes are still drying on the line.
  3. If your dryer is busted, it would be great to have a clothesline to allow you to dry your clothes.

In an effort to broaden their market share and to make the world a little greener, Breeze Dryer realizes that it is forbidden to hang laundry in most subdivisions and certain municipalities, so they support an organization called Project Laundry List (PLL) that is actively seeking federal and state "right to dry" legislation. Donations fund advocacy, education and art. Don’t ask questions. Just go to the website and you’ll see what I mean by all of that. It’s serious business.

National Hanging Out Day is April 19. Mark it on your calendar! You can also Sign the Right2Dry petition. It’s a campaign in partnership with PLL encouraging the first family to hang their laundry on the White House lawn for a one day symbolic photo-op. A novel idea.
