painting-countertops.jpg It seems everyone wants granite countertops these days. But what if you’re looking to update your kitchen without spending a ton of money?

What if I told you that you could have the look of granite countertops for a fraction of the cost. What?? No way!!!

All kidding aside, there’s an awesome product made by Giani that makes painting countertops a frugal investment. My wife brought "granite in a can" to my attention recently and it looks as though it has been added to my honey-do list.

My jar runneth over.

Actually, I think all I’ll need to do for this project is to say "Go for it!" and I’m done. She’s that excited about it.

To update your old tile, Formica, or even Corian counter tops with the look of granite, have you thought about painting countertops with a product that makes them look like granite?

Giani’s granite paint for countertops appears to be a winner. There are all sorts of advantages to this product and little on the negative side.

Using the same automotive grade resins that are used to manufacture car bumpers, the product is extremely durable and will last as long as a conventional countertop.

Once finished, the countertop will be heat resistant to 250 degrees (just like Formica) and can be easily cleaned using mild soap and water.

Check out these photos of what the finished product looks like:

Advantages to using granite countertop paint:

  • The project is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than replacing the counters with granite.
  • It is not porous like granite so it does not absorb potentially harmful bacteria.
  • It does not require periodical re-sealing like granite.
  • It does not show fingerprints like granite.

The main disadvantage to the product is that it takes two weeks for the counter to completely cure, although you can start using the counter… gently… after 48 hours.

How do I apply granite paint to my countertops?

Here’s a how-to DIY from the manufacturer:

Painting countertops to look like granite looks simple, doesn’t it?  A kit that covers 16 linear feet of 24 inch deep counter, or 35 square feet, only costs $50!!  The kit includes all the brushes and sponges, plus instructions.

This is a project that I will be posting the results of after we’ve completed it.
